Ranjana had an inclination towards painting right from the childhood so she joined evening classes at
Dr. Wakankar's painting school at Ujjain. She was very much interested in painting and sketching and thus went on to learn watercolor and wash painting from him.
How it all happened: "My husband's been in the Defense Forces. I always wanted to have an identity of my own so I started painting as a hobby to gainfully utilize the time. My husband's and friends appreciation encouraged me to look for taking up this hobby as a business. In the Army circle oil paintings are integral part of Officer's Mess, Offices, Institutions and Homes. So there was definite scope, which prompted me to start this venture. In 1976, at Defense Services Staff College, Wellington, I participated in amateur painting exhibition of Officer's Wives. A few orders came from Officers for their homes and gradually these started pouring. I make copies of the great masters like Rim Brantt, Hay Wayne, John Constable etc. I worked at home and put up exhibitions from time to time at each new station where my husband was posted. Today many institutions in Armed Forces like, Officers Mess, Offices, Military Hospitals and Armed Forces Medical College display oil paintings done by
me"
